Building up and training an idol group costs millions of dollars. Though there are more profits than losses in this business because idol groups make around 1,000,000,000,000 Won ($900,000,000) per year.
Thanks to their CDs, DVDs, concerts, CFs and promotions in the whole Asian market including not only Korea but also China, Japan, Taiwan, Malaysia etc., idol groups are able to earn a high sum of money. With their expanded promotions all over Asia, they can make 300,000,000,000 - 400,000,000,000 Won ($270,000,000 - 360,000,000) annually. By adding their other income sources such as CFs, concerts etc. they can easily reach an annual amount of 1,000,000,000,000 Won ($900,000,000).
The girl groups, Kara and Girls' Generation, as an example, made a total of 30,000,000,000 Won ($27,000,000) in Japan within 3 months. And TVXQ earned 130,000,000,000 Won ($117,000,000) in a year just by their CD sales in Japan.
However, all the earned money is split with the celebrities and the agency which spends the rest of the money to create or train new idol groups. It's an endless cycle which is created like this. Idol groups from the older generation provide the promotion money for the younger generations. For example, HOT and Shinhwa's profits went to TVXQ and TVXQ's profits now flow to Girls' Generation and their profits will be used for the next generation.
